Is pizza Italian or Greek?
Pizza is a dish that has Italian origins, with records of the dish dating back to the 18th century in Naples, Italy. Pizza is widely recognized as a symbol of Italian cuisine, and is now popular all over the world.
The pizza as we know it today was eventually perfected in Napoli by a baker named Raffaele Esposito in 1889. The Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889 and Esposito created a pizza in the colors of the Italian flag, which is today known as the ‘Margherita Pizza’. This pizza was made with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the colors of the Italian flag.
While Naples is widely credited as the birthplace of pizza, the Greeks also have their own version of pizza known as ‘Lahmajoun’. This is a flatbread made with a thin pastry dough that is topped with a mixture of minced meat, onion and spices. The dish is usually served as a snack or appetizer, and is widely popular in the Middle East. So while pizza may have Italian origins, the Greeks also have their own version of the dish.
