How much did Joao Cancelo cost?
Joao Cancelo was signed by Manchester City from Italian club, Juventus for a reported fee of £60 million. The fee includes a basic transfer fee of £27.4 million, plus a potential £32.6 million in add-ons. The transfer was confirmed on August 8th, 2019.
The fee makes Cancelo the most expensive full-back in the Premier League history, surpassing the previous record set by Liverpool for Virgil Van Dijk, who cost the Reds £75 million from Southampton in 2018. Cancelo has also become the most expensive Portuguese player in history, surpassing the previous record set by Bernardo Silva, who cost City £43 million from Monaco in 2017.
The fee paid for Cancelo is seen as a major statement of intent on City’s part, as they look to upgrade their squad in order to challenge for next season’s Premier League title. City already had a strong defensive line-up, but the signing of Cancelo will add even more depth and quality to their back-line.
