How does cystic fibrosis affect the reproductive system?
Cystic fibrosis can have a significant impact on the reproductive system of those affected. The mucus that builds up in the lungs of those with cystic fibrosis can lead to decreased fertility, as it can cause blockages in the reproductive organs. This can lead to difficulties with conception, as well as an increased risk of miscarriage. Additionally, the hormonal imbalances that come with cystic fibrosis can lead to abnormal menstrual cycles, or even a complete lack of menstruation. Furthermore, cystic fibrosis can cause infertility in both men and women. In men, the thick mucus build up can cause blockages in the reproductive organs, leading to a decrease in sperm count, quality, and motility. In women, the thick mucus can block the fallopian tubes, preventing the egg from traveling to the uterus. Additionally, cystic fibrosis can cause hormonal imbalances which can lead to anovulation, or a lack of ovulation. Finally, cystic fibrosis can cause a decrease in libido, due to the fatigue and other symptoms it causes. All of these factors can lead to difficulties in conceiving, or even complete infertility.
